Humans of Copywriting… 7 Very Short Stories

I’m sitting in a Barnes & Noble coffee shop. It’s raining, so even though it’s mid-day, it could be any drippy, dreamy moment in time.

I see a woman furiously typing away on her laptop. She’s touch typing. Odd. You don’t see that much anymore. Maybe she took typing in high school like I did. But probably not on an IBM Selectric II. She’s much too young for that.

I see an old man reading the local paper. The pages are very small. Like the newspaper decided to print itself at half size. Elf size. Maybe he’s gotten to the ad about Taco Week in Manchester. I love Taco Week.

A man just walked in with his 2 daughters. A preteen and a kindergartener. The preteen is bored out of her skin. The kindergartener is ripping open a Princess Sofia bracelet kit. Uh oh. Dad got upset. Now they’re going to buy a cookie.

Other people I see: I college student writing a term paper, earbuds in both ears. I guess the B&N music isn’t for her. I see a retired couple checking out the magazine rack. And I see a middle-aged man taking pictures of the important part of the book he’s reading. (That makes me smile. I totally do that.)

And I see myself… a woman sitting in a coffee shop, writing about the humanity around her.

Take-away: It’s about the people. It’s always the people… then the product. (And product is a far distant second.)
